With no relation to the Colosseum in Long Island (or is it Staten Island?) Chrysler-Fiat has announced they will drop the long running Sebring nameplate next year. Its replacement, Nassau. The Chrysler Nassau concept first appeared back at the 2007 NAIAS – aka the Detroit Auto Show.

Details are sketchy at best, but so far we know Chrysler’s Nassau will feature new exterior styling and an improved interior. The base 173 hp (129 kW / 175 PS) 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine will carry over, but the 235 hp (175 kW / 238 PS) 3.5-liter V6 will be replaced by the 280 hp (209 kW / 284 PS) 3.6-liter Pentastar V6.

The 2011 Nassau will be launched later this year, and is a welcomed upgrade to the Sebring platform. Once a popular 4-door sedan by the American auto maker, Sebring (and its twin Dodge Stratus) came under fire in their latest version – critics have bashed it for being poorly constructed and “ugly.” Poor Sebring, only trying to be a fine American automobile. Good night, sweet prince. We now welcome Nassau.

Chrysler has a sibling to bring together with their 300C luxury sedan family – The Nassau Concept. With hints of the classic New Yorker model line, this concept, which was recently introduced in production model form at NAIAS, will soon impress car buyers at CDJ lots nationwide.

Chrysler Nassau is redesign heaven all the way around – inside and out. From the LED headlamps and new angled grill, to the mirrors, doors and lifted rear end, it’s a daring Chrysler model for the next generation of this struggling auto maker (but these days, who isn’t hurting?) Nassau’s aggressive hood covers up a 6.1 liter HEMI, which pumps out 425 horsepower @ 6200 rpm. It can reach zero to sixty in five seconds – with a top speed of 165. Quite a powerful drive train for a luxury sedan.

Inside, the driver will experience one of the most comfortable driving experiences, and is also visually appealing. The housing of the instrument panel contains a three-layer screen, which allows simultaneous display of navigation, passenger entertainment and vehicle function displays. As they move toward the doors, the left and right side lower portions of the two-tone panel rise upward.

All four occupants will sit in comfortable bucket seating, but the real treat is Nassau’s steering controls. The wheel itself hearkens back to those of classic cars from the 40′s, 50′s and 60′s. Tachs do as well, with digital reading projected from a circular display. Stick controls on the steering mount also make us think of Chrysler’s past.

In all, the soon to come Nassau is a combination of all the greatest design ideas from Chrysler both yesterday and today.
