RAM Into The Ground – Recalling 56,000 RAM Trucks

Worried your RAM (Formerly Chrysler’s Dodge Ram) may crack its axle with a huge payload and come crashing into the ground? Well your concerns might be justified.

According to the NHTSA, select 2011 Ram 1500 trucks built between September 2009 and December 2010 have rear axle bearings that are wearing out much more quickly than they should be.

Is your all new RAM having this issue? Here’s what to look for: problems begin with a “whining or howling noise from the rear end” followed by grinding. Once you reach that point, you’re pretty much screwed. It’s possible for the bearing to fail altogether. When a bearing completely fails RAM’s rear wheel could lock up, greatly increasing the likelihood of an accident.

The NHTSA statement claims that in worst case scenarios, failing bearings could cause the engine to stall, but in either case this increases the chances of a crash. General Motors announced last week that they are recalling 1300 Cadillac, GMC and Chevrolet light duty trucks over a similar rear axle condition.

The recall is set to officially start next month. Owners will be invited to return to their local Chrysler dealership, where rear axle bearings will be inspected and replaced free of charge, if needed.
